Isabelle Wiessler’s work places itself in the long established tradition of expressive colouring known as painting with light.
First developed by such renowned artists as Willem van der Velde de Jonge and William Turner, whose turbulent seascapes and imaginative landscapes were characterized by their chromatic palette and broadly applied atmospheric washes of paint. Their imagination was sparked by natural phenomena and dramatic atmospheric effects. Isabelle’s practise follows this approach. As a keen photographer she records seasonal changes in landscape and the variations of surface reflection on water wherever she may be. She has developed a sensibility to the ever changing moods of Nature. However Isabelle’s work is not limited to the flat canvas as a painter’s work would be. Her work has an added dimension. By freely machine quilting the surfaces which she subsequentlich paints, a new dynamic is created. The surface comes alive, has movement and intent.Isabelle has a keen eye for detail. This is evident in her mixed media work in which surface manipulation and intricate stitching are used to recreate some of the rich textural experiences Nature has to offer. Her works are fine examples of what an Art Quilt can be. A vehicle for personal expression with a strong feel of quilting tradition and heritage.
