I AM NOT WHAT I AM,

I AM WHAT I DO WITH MY HANDS.

PAINTING WITH LIGHT

Isabelle Wiessler’s work places itself in the long established tradition of expressive colouring known as painting with light. First developed by such renowned artists as Willem van der Velde de Jonge and William Turner, whose turbulent seascapes and imaginative landscapes were characterized by their chromatic palette and broadly applied atmospheric washes of paint. Their imagination was sparked by natural phenomena and dramatic atmospheric effects. Isabelle’s practise follows this approach.

Isabelle Wiessler’s works navigate the space between intimacy and distance, between figuration and abstraction. Fiber, stitch, color, and light come together to form spaces that are not closed off, but remain open to our own perception. Many of us, while viewing the works, have the feeling of being drawn into these landscapes—into moors, fields, bark-like textures, or atmospheric spaces of color that appear as sensual as they are fragile.
